HOW TO REFRESH YOUR WARDROBE
When life feels a little too chaotic, or if I have to make a big decision in life I immediately go straight to my closet for a good clean out. Nothing clears more mind space then decluttering your wardrobe to help you feel lighter and more organized. Recently I did a major wardrobe clean out and discarded
worn + old pieces that have had their time to make room for new classic staples. I wanted to only keep pieces that 1. fit well (get rid of the pieces you think you will once again fit into some day) 2. classics that I gravitate towards daily if not weekly ( my favorite go to white tees + quality denim) and 3. stay in a color pallet that felt natural and authentic to my personal style.
Pinterest is one of my most treasured tools when it comes to personal style. Before a big clean out I like to create a "Closet Edit" board and pin inspiring outfits to help create a clear picture of what pieces I want to put back or add into my closet. Another tool I use is browsing my favorite retailers websites or social media accounts to see what my eye is attracted to.
CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER
A key starting point is to take everything out of your closet and create a clean canvas to work with. It will be a little messy but you will thank yourself later for being able to visually build a wardrobe you love. By doing this, it resets your eye and let's you look at your pieces in a different mindset. My rule of thumb is if you haven't worn it in at least six months it probably isn't one of your core pieces you wear daily. Seasonality is a big factor depending on where you live but don't let this deter from your main goal of creating a wardrobe that allows you to be excited to get dressed everyday.
ORGANIZE YOUR WARDROBE
Once you have sorted through all your pieces it is time to put your core items back into your closet. These are the pieces you gravitate towards and are excited to wear daily. I normally organize them by category but use whatever system makes sense for you and your needs. I always like to arrange everything like my own personal boutique. It creates excitement and ease when getting dressed in the morning. In my closet, my basics are my lifeline. My wardrobe consists of basic cotton tees, quality denim, cozy knits, classic button downs, and neutral shoes + bags to mix and match with. Casual neutrals are what make me feel the most confident. I eliminated the pieces that I "thought I should have" and focused on what I love to wear everyday.
MAKE A SHOPPING LIST
For me it's all about quality vs. quantity. Make a list of wardrobe staples you might be lacking that will create versatility in your closet. A few key items might include a beautiful tan trench coat, a classic white sneaker, a black leather handbag, ect. The possibilities are endless when you discover what you love to wear and feel most like yourself in. Invest in pieces that will last like a classic cotton white tee instead of buying a few lower quality tees to get you by. Continue to slowly add in pieces and you will have a wardrobe you love in no time.
