REIMAGINING OUR BACKYARD

As January has come and gone, I’m eagerly waiting to get out into the garden and start prepping the flower beds for new growth. As we all know in the midwest this is still a ways a way but a girl can dream right?! Last week I selected and purchased a few seed varieties for what I want to plant in my raised flower beds. Last year was my first crack at a cut flower garden and I was a little too ambitious with wanting to grow + try so many different kinds of flowers. This year my focus is to grow what I truly love and will use to style in my own home. My love for white + green varieties is what stands the test of time for me so focusing on easy to grow white flowers, and simple greenery is what my goal is for this upcoming spring + summer season.

I’ve found so much joy in curating and sourcing for the warmer seasons ahead. The mood board above was so therapeutic to put together + really visualize what is has been inspiring me for months. Our backyard is pretty much a blank slate with the addition to my four raised flower beds that we put in last spring. It’s a rather large space that we added a white vinyl fence when we first moved for privacy and it’s exciting to keep adding things each season to make it our own. Our deck is a main priority as ours is very old and is need of a lot of tender loving care. Another addition we are planning for is a lower patio/dining space. We’re thinking large pavers to create a slab look and adding a vintage wooden long table with wicker chairs for outdoor dining + entertaining.

For my main flower seed selections this season I am doing zinnias (Oklahoma White variety), ammi (a queen anne’s lace lookalike), white hydrangeas. For greenery seeds I’ve picked out persian cress, and dragon cress which I am so excited to have fresh greens to cut and style with. In addition to the cut flower garden I’m excited to pick out beautiful shrubs + bushes to plant in my various pots around the deck + patio for a more lived in + layered feel.

Can’t wait to take you along as we continue to make our house feel like home.
